The CBI Presents: Ann James
About
All about the PlayIt’s like theatre, don’t you think, telling a story in a picture book - each opening a stage? In fact, if there are words, it’s what’s between the lines and around the corners that the illustrator plays with. No point being a mere echo.
The words and pictures fill each-others gaps. And as the words often come first the author has left the spaces.
Of course, for the illustrator there’s a fair bit of space to fill. Sets to design, actors to find, we dress them, direct them, place them wherever, build the props, create the weather, colour the moods. And, at last, leave it to the readers to hear, see and feel the story.
So, I’d like to do a sort of show and tell about my own processes and experience:
Choosing projects
Team work
Creating characters
Storyboards and dummies
Line and drawing (drawing with anything)
Choosing the medium
Favourite picture books and illustrators
How to start and when to stop
The Doldrums
When in doubt, doodle
