Broken Hill and its Old Jewish Community
The Lamm Jewish Library of Australia proudly presents a lecture by Professor Leon Mann, distinguished psychologist and a graduate of the University of Melbourne.
Join us as we explore the Jewish community of Broken Hill, New South Wales, and a history dating back to the 1880s.
BROKEN HILL:
Broken Hill was a thriving mining town in the late 1800s, at one point becoming the third-largest provider of silver in the world. Jewish settlers arrived from Central and Eastern Europe from the 1880s, establishing a congregation, and a synagogue. The synagogue and community were active until around the 1960s. From 1991 until 2010 the Broken Hill Historical Society transformed the synagogue into a Jewish museum.
ABOUT PROFESSOR MANN:
Professor Leon Mann, a distinguished psychologist and graduate of the University of Melbourne, co-authored the book Jews of the Outback, chronicling the history of Broken Hill's Jewish community. Born in Broken Hill in 1937, his parents migrated to Australia during the Great Depression and the Jewish community prospered by supplying and provisioning miners.
