A Winter Concert: Durufle and Boulanger
About
The Llewellyn Choir is glad to present a program of French music featuring Maurice Durufle’s Requiem, together with three pieces by short-lived child prodigy Lili Boulanger.Durufle’s Requiem was commissioned by in 1941, but not completed until 1947. His original published version called for substantial choral forces and full orchestra, but a more intimate version for voices and organ followed in 1948. The Requiem, which draws on Gregorian chant, is regarded as one of the finest 20th century religious works, and has come to be associated with the call for world peace.
Nearly half a century earlier, Lili Boulanger had written the three pieces featured in our concert program. Boulanger, the first female winner of the Prix de Rome composition prize, fuses styles from Romantic and Impressionist composers like Gabriel Fauré and Claude Debussy into her choral works
