Teaching Spelling and Vocabulary Through Meaning
About
The key to learning spelling and vocabulary is meaning. A word’s spellingprovides clues to its meaning and its origin, and conversely, a word’s meaning
will give us clues to its spelling.
In this workshop our presenter Dr Misty Andoniou will unpack the ways words convey meaning through their etymology (word origins), morphology (meaning components), phonology (sounds) and orthography (spelling conventions). This will provide participants with an understanding of how strong, multiple pathways into learning words supports EAL/D students to spell, read and use new vocabulary.
Dr Misty Adoniou is an Associate Professor in Language, Literacy and Teaching English as a Second Language. Misty holds an adjunct position at the University of Canberra and is a Principal Fellow with the University of Melbourne’s Graduate School of Education.
