About

Karl S Williams accompanied by Sally Wiggins on drums, supported by the wonderful Mandy Hawkes at Nambucca Community and Arts Hall this April to celebrate 3 years of Archive music events in the Nambucca Valley and Coffs Coast.

KARL S WILLIAMS

'Karl S. Williams… A genre defying, multi-instrumentalist and award-winning artist with a voice and conviction so powerful it takes your breath away. Karl's music is timeless and deeply rooted in tradition yet ever conversant with the present. Drawing from folk, blues and gospel his songs are steeped in the swamp water of the northern NSW cane country where he was raised, lending the distinct flavour of this land to all his work.

Distilling life, love and the human condition, his music calls with urgency and sings without apology. His solution and vocation: to love more. A Karl S. Williams performance - either solo or with his band - is frequently referred to as a spiritual experience, leaving an audience slightly altered in the best way possible.'

MANDY HAWKES

'After spending years in a musical wasteland, Mandy Hawkes began to write songs again, and became preoccupied with singing about mortality, end times and other serious themes.  Raised on a steady diet of Hymns and Dylan, Mandy’s unconventional voice is equal parts weary soul traveller and folk storyteller.

She sings authentic songs that will move even the stoniest of hearts, marrying folk traditions with Australian country. '

PRESS RELEASE:

Genre defying multi-instrumentalist and award winning songwriter Karl S. Williams is taking his
new album ‘Rainbows in the Gasoline’ on the road with a series of extensive and expanding tours.
Joining him is renowned South Coast percussionist Sally Wiggins who brings an immense
musicality - enabling these folk, blues and gospel inflected songs to expand into fascinating new
territory.
With a mandate to improvise, eschew convention and play, Karl and Sally liberate each other to
explore and lean into the songs, playing with space and silence as much as notes. Less than a
year into their journey the pair have already clocked up appearances at festivals such as Cronulla
Jazz & Blues, Wintermoon and Kiama Jazz & Blues - and opened for The Whitlams.
Long enamoured with the drummer-singer duo format in its capacity to both rock and be intimate
it was a fortuitous meeting at Majors Creek Music Festival early in 2023 which brought Karl and
Sally together. The mutual admiration and immediate connection translated into a magical musical
communication from the first moment they convened to together. Now the pair set about
exploring the gamut of this sound on stages across the country - to mesmerising effect.
Sally’s drum accompaniment […] enhanced the music, brought texture and gave space
for the spiritual intensity that has attracted me to your music. Sally has great touch […]
but also deep feel for what you express. The on-stage chemistry between you is
beautiful to experience.
