2024 Out of Office: His Honour Andrew Stavrianou
His Honour Andrew Stavrianou retires as a Judge of the District Court of Western Australia in April 2024. He was first appointed in 2006 and concludes his service as the Senior Judge of the Court.
His Honour was appointed a Judge of the District Court of Western Australia on 10 April 2006. From May 2020 he was the Senior Judge of the District Court.
He graduated from the University of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Jurisprudence in 1975, a Bachelor of Laws in 1976 and a Master of Laws in 1994.
Mr Stavrianou was admitted to practice in December 1977, and was a partner of a Perth law firm between 1982 and 1992. In 1992 he joined the Independent Bar at Francis Burt Chambers.
While at the Bar Mr Stavrianou held additional roles, including serving as the Deputy Chairperson of the Building Disputes Tribunal 1999-2006 and as a Commissioner of the District Court in 1995,1999 and 2003.
As a judge, Mr Stavrianou has also held the following roles with the court system: Chair of District Court Technology Committee (2007-2018), Member Higher Courts Combined Technology Committee (2007-2018), member of the District Court Civil Administration Committee (2006-2018), member of the District Court Management Committee (2017-2019, 2020-2024). He has also been a member of the Judicial Council on Cultural Diversity and Inclusion, the Judicial Officers Association Executive Committee and the District Court of WA’s representative on the Judicial Officers Association of Australia
Mr Stavrianou will provide remarks and will then be joined in conversation with Femke Elferink.
Proceeds from all Piddington activities go toward our access to justice projects. These are: the Piddington PLT Fund, which supports the CLCs that host Piddington PLT graduates to complete their hours required for admission; the Piddington Justice Fund for CLCs, to cover costs that they otherwise cannot meet; and, Kaartdijin, our First Nations Legal Education Fund. We also fund the Christine Wheeler Scholarship and John Chaney Award for new law graduates and law students. Annually we are able to make contributions of more than $50,000 to the community through these projects.
