Writer Laid Bare - Author Talk
The Lamm Jewish Library of Australia is presenting this conversation between Lee Kofman and writer Ramona Koval on not just her art, craft and life, but also on the ways in which October 7 has shaped how Jewish writers and artists see their place in the Australia of today.
Lee Kofman
Dr Lee Kofman is a rare bird in the literary landscape. A Russian born Israeli-Australian writer of eight books, including two anthologies, who also teaches writing. Most remarkable perhaps is that her last five books were written in English - Kofman’s third language.
Her first three books were novels and a collection of short stories written in Hebrew, her second language. She says her writing and reading life began in a remote Siberian village where she recited her first poem in her first language, Russian, “to an admiring crowd of illiterate babushkas.” What followed was decades of wrestling with the art and craft of writing and passionate reading. She is an immensely well-read writer, a rarity at a time when so many writers avoid reading others in case their style is corrupted.
Lee’s most recent book, The Writer Laid Bare: Mastering Emotional Honesty in a Writer’s Art, Craft and Life has been hailed by many as inspiring and raw in its wisdom and vulnerability.
Since October 7th 2023, she has been a leader in supporting our Australian Jewish community of writers, artists, creatives and academics.
Ramona Koval
Ramona Koval is a renowned Australian broadcaster, writer, and journalist known for her influential career at ABC Radio. Koval continues to shape the literary landscape as an Honorary Fellow at the School of Communication and Creative Arts at Deakin University.
