THE LIFE & LEGACY OF JOSIAH WEDGWOOD
Josiah Wedgwood FRS (12 July 1730 – 3 January 1795) was an English potter, entrepreneur and abolitionist. He founded his now world famous company, Wedgwood in 1759. Wedgwood was an innovator and developed improved pottery bodies by systematic experimentation, and was widely recognised as a the leader in the industrialisation of the manufacture of European pottery. He ais also remembered as a prominent abolitionist fighting for the end of slavery, Wedgwood is remembered too for his Am I Not a Man And a Brother? anti-slavery medallion. He was a member of the Darwin–Wedgwood family, and he was the grandfather of Charles and Emma Darwin. This lecture explores the life and legacy of Josiah Wedgwood.
