FAM May Film Event - FLiCKERFEST 2024 Tour to Mackay
Celebrating 33 years in 2024, Flickerfest remains Australia’s leading Oscar® and BAFTA Qualifying international short film festival, ensuring that we continue to present A-list short film programmes recognised amongst the best in the world with films hand-picked from the festival’s record 3,400 entries!
Flickerfest, Australia’s largest Short Film Festival, is excited to be returning on its National Tour to the Central Qld Conservatorium Of Music showcasing the Best of Australian Shorts programme highlights, all handpicked from our recent Bondi festival competitions.
The short films screening are all entertaining, inspiring, award-winning and fresh from their premieres in competition at Flickerfest Bondi, giving Mackay Flickerfest audiences a window into the hottest contemporary shorts from at home and across the world today.
On Saturday 11 May, 7.30pm the Best of Australian Shorts programme screening shines a spotlight on the incredible short film talent that exists in our emerging Australian industry with a host of Australian stories honoring our unique identity and culture. Highlights include the winner of Best Screenplay at Flickerfest 2024 Cold Water, a poignant and memorable relationship drama, starring industry legend Bruce Spence, who delivers an electrifying performance as a man for whom the past cannot be divorced from the present; and the delightful comedy shot in Cloncurry, The Bank Manager based on a 1932 true story of a few maverick cowboys and a woman named Peach pulling off a sophisticated heist, directed by Madeleine Chaplain and produced by Luke Chaplain.
Australian legends also star in the fun father and daughter comedy Ashes, written and directed by Georgina Haigh (The Sapphires, Back to the Rafters), who stars alongside laugh-out-loud performances from comedy masters Michael Caton and Michala Banas.
Plus the winner of our Panasonic Award For Best Australian Short Film (Oscar® Qualifying) the stunning choreographic short Yeah The Boys that takes a whimsical, hard but heartfelt look at Australian male drinking culture, beautifully enhanced by a stunning original soundtrack from the Avalanches.
And the outstanding First Nations film, Djalbuyan Nahra also shines, fresh from its Flickerfest premiere, by award winning 23 year old filmmaker Jahvis Loveday. Djalbuyan, meaning little sister in the first nations Dyirbal language of far North Queensland, follows the true story of his little sister Nahra. Taken from her community, Nahra returns home to confront the past and reconnect with her people, land, and waters after 8 years away.
Some of the great Australian actors featuring this year are:
Michael Caton, Benita Collings, Collin Friels, Georgina Haig, Bruce Spence, Meyne Wyatt and Stephen Curry.
