The perinatal period is a time full of change, including profound shifts in identity, uncertainty about what is happening or what is ‘good enough’, sensory overload, and disruptions to routines. For Autistic parents, the challenges of adjusting to parenthood can be magnified in multiple ways. This presentation explores some of the challenges experienced by autistic parents, how these can impact mental health, and neuro-affirming ways to support autistic parents presenting with mental health concerns in the perinatal period. This presentation is also suitable for maternal and child health nurses and mental health clinicians working with autistic parents in the perinatal period.Emily is a clinical psychologist with several years experience working in perinatal and infant mental health in inpatient settings and in private practice. She has an ongoing interest in supporting autistic parents and the parent-infant relationship in the perinatal period.
