Northern Tasmania has seen a succession of attempts to house vice-regal personages in suitable style. Paterson's early prefabricated houses at George Town and York Town gave way to the modest Government Cottage in Launceston. By the 1850s this was thought to require major redevelopment - which never came. In 1885 the cottage was demolished and its land incorporated into today's City Park. The site is marked with an explanatory placard.
But there was much more to the story...
Lynette Ross has authored this book founded on new research into colonial records which reveals a lively panorama of early Launceston.
