Explore with us the world of learning and invention through a cappella choral music

from 11th century Italy to 21st century Spain, via Belgium, Estonia, Turkey, Argentina and Cuba.

Highly regarded for its performances of Spanish and Latin American music, in this concert Coro Austral will take you on a creative journey of musical discovery.

Artistic Director Margot McLaughlin has devised a program that highlights the ways composers from many cultures and across the centuries have been inspired to craft exquisite music from the simple scale!

The centrepiece is Missa Ut Re Me Fa Sol La (Hexachord Mass) commemorating 500 years since the birth of Italian composer Giovanni Palestrina, one of the towering figures of the Renaissance, who inspired so many other composers.  Palestrina ingeniously weaves his superb choral inventions around a scale based entirely on the sequence do re mi fa sol la.

Other creative settings of the scale are provided by Guido d’Arezzo (11th century Italy), Orlando di Lasso (16^th Century Flemish), Guiseppe Verdi (19^th century Italy) and Arvo Párt (20^th century Estonia).

These pieces are complemented with works exploring wisdom and our place in the world by composers Pau Casals and Bernat Vivancos (Catalonia), Fernando Moruja (Argentina) and Silvio Rodriguez (Cuba).
