Maya and the Wave follows Brazilian surfer Maya Gabeira, the first woman to surf Nazaré’s giant wave. After nearly drowning and facing public ridicule, she returned post-recovery to ride the biggest wave ever surfed by a woman. The film highlights her fight for recognition and the ongoing gender inequality in big wave surfing.
