The Australian Antarctic Territory comprises 42% of the Antarctic. What on earth did a population of fewer than seven million in the inter-war years want with the ‘Home of the Blizzard’, as Douglas Mawson called it?
This talk will reveal this untold story as well as how Australia helped to shape the 1959 Antarctic Treaty to ensure the non-militarisation of the Antarctic.
Dr Marie Kawaja Biographical Details:
Marie Kawaja is a historian of Australian diplomatic history, previously with the Department
of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Australian National University. Her research focus is the
early political and diplomatic history of the Australian Antarctic.
There will be a Q&A session following the presentation, then light refreshments.
