Joan Gratz: My Journey from Art Film to Cat Video

We're incredibly pleased to welcome one of the great animators working in the form to Australia to be part of the St Kida Film Festival and talk all things animation. Joan Gratz is an Academy Award winning director of animated short films and commercials. Her films range in content through painterly expressions of poetry, improvised abstraction, and animated social documentary.The technique she pioneered is “Claypainting.” Working directly before the camera, she applies bits of clay, blends colours and etches fine lines to create a seamless flow of images. Mona Lisa Descending a Staircase won the Oscar in 1992 for Best Animated Short Film.
In addition to claypainting, she works with high-relief clay images filmed directly under the camera. These metamorphizing images have the appearance of sculpted wood and shifting sand.
