This day was built specifically for OTs and physios who are already working in disability, aged care, hospital discharge, or rehab. You know your stuff. This isn't about starting from scratch. It's about sharpening what you already know, working through the situations that don't have easy answers, and leaving with more confidence in the recommendations you're making every day.

What we actually cover

Most manual handling training teaches technique and calls it done. Bend your knees, neutral spine, lift with your legs. We all know that sits at the bottom of the hierarchy — and yet that's where most CPD stops.

This day doesn't.

We spend real time on the stuff that actually matters in practice. Not just what equipment to prescribe, but whether the care routine we're recommending is going to hold up six months from now — when staffing changes, when a client's function shifts, when a casual worker turns up who's never met this person before.

We look at the whole system, not just the client in front of us. Because if a support worker is quietly absorbing more and more physical load as a client's capacity changes and nobody's flagged it — that's something we should be seeing.

Three things we go into properly:

Ratios of care
How do you make a sound, defensible recommendation when the staffing ratio doesn't match the physical reality of the transfer? Is it ever genuinely safe to hoist with one support worker? We work through how to assess it, how to justify it, and how to document your reasoning in a way that holds up.

When family wants it done differently
How do you navigate the gap between your clinical recommendation, the client's choice, and dignity of risk — without compromising your professional standing or the client's safety? We work through this one honestly, because it comes up all the time and there's no tidy answer.

Your legal obligations in manual handling documentation
WHS legislation is specific about what's required of you. Generic care plans don't cut it. We cover what a thorough manual handling risk assessment actually needs to include, what has to be documented, and why it matters — especially if something goes wrong.

Hands on, the whole day

Alongside those discussions, you'll get proper hands-on time with equipment — not just a quick demo, but time to actually try things, ask questions, and problem-solve. We cover:

• Standing aids and standing lifters
• Hoists, sling selection and who to know what yoke suits who
• Bed mobility aids and techniques
• Slide sheets and repositioning tools

There's also time to work through challenges from your own caseload. Bring a client situation you've been turning over — that's exactly what the afternoon is designed for.

You'll take away a participant workbook I developed specifically for this course. Something you can refer back to, not just file away.

About your facilitator

I'm Natasha Nutt, OT and Director of Movementum. I've been working in community-based disability and aged care for over 20 years, and manual handling education has been a core part of that work for most of it.

I work at the intersection of clinical OT practice and care systems every day — with clients, support workers, care managers, families, and equipment suppliers. This course reflects how I actually think about this work, not just what the textbook says.
