But There Were No Convicts in SA!
About
This month for Twilight Talks, Helen Livingston will be challenging the idea that there were no convicts in South Australia.
Online via Zoom and in the library on Unley Road. Genealogy SA members: FREE! Non-members: $20 online, $30 in person (includes full-day access to our library resources with volunteer assistance).
No convicts here! Are you sure? This talk will explore the 'convict history' of South Australia.
When Helen was a newcomer in South Australia, almost the first thing her Victorian-born teenage children were told was, 'You come from a convict colony. We (South Australia) had NO convicts.' But the truth of South Australia's convict history is much more complex.
From 1837 to 1852, South Australia sentenced prisoners to transportation and they were sent to either Sydney or Hobart. The convict stain has been submerged and forgotten in South Australian history, but ex-convicts roamed all over the colony.
Please note, this session will be recorded, and all registrants will receive a link to the recording after the event.
Registrations close Tuesday 1 July, 9:00 am.
