Plants in Space - Schools Day

Explore the role of plants in space in this free STEM event for Years 5–8! Design space plants, survive a Mars BioDome, and discover how to grow food for astronauts.
Join us for an immersive (free!) experience where science meets imagination! In this multi-session event aimed at students from year levels 5 - 8, you’ll step into the role of an astrobotanist and explore the vital role of plants in space exploration.
- Design your own space plant with the Australian Space Discovery Centre, and discover how plants can provide food, fibres, medicine, and more in the unique environment of space.
- Take on the challenge of surviving a year on Mars using plants and experimental technologies in a BioDome simulation, powered by the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium’s interactive Project Space Botany app. Navigate the complex systems needed for off-planet living and see how plants make it all possible.
- Dive into the science of nutrition for space explorers with the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plants for Space. Learn what astronauts need to eat, how to grow it in space, and how to make that food delicious and sustainable for long-term missions.
Get ready to problem-solve, explore, and imagine a greener future among the stars!
Important notes: students need to be guided by teachers and parents for this day.
