Melinda Schneider is most well known as a six-time CMAA Golden Guitar Award winning singer, songwriter and recording artist, but when her live touring work dried up due to Covid in 2020, Melinda began painting. A creative soul by nature, like singing and song writing, visual art is another dynamic way for Melinda to communicate and seek freedom through expression.
Based on the Bouddi Penninsula (GuriNgai Country), Melinda draws her inspiration from the fauna, flora and ancient spirituality of the area β her home.
Melinda experienced two bouts of major depression in 2018 and 2019 and painting as a practice offers her a way to process difficult feelings and helps her stay in the moment. Melinda creates her works by applying acrylic to plywood with brushes, twigs, rollers, rags and sponges. She resonates with plywood and all itβs gorgeous flaws and her techniques are akin to the rhythmic pulse of song writing.
For this exhibition, the musical composition came first, then the visual works. I created the album βTenderβ and developed 12 original paintings representing the 12 songs from the album. I created each piece by applying acrylic to plywood with brushes, twigs, rollers, rags and sponges. Plywood has so many gorgeous flaws β itβs the perfect surface for the techniques I use, which are similar to the rhythmic pulse of song writing. Soft. Vulnerable. Gentle. Sensitive to pain.
I began a journey of self-acceptance; slowly becoming brave enough to stand tall in my own skin. The journey led to my wonderful husband, and our baby boy and a deeper more authentic creative expression. Now, I can be tender for my son. Soft with nature. Vulnerable with others. Gentle on myself. And tender through my art.
I hope that as you experience Tender, you connect with your own journey β and feel proud of how far you have come.
