Knowledge of Iran's history is essential for understanding its contemporary actions and worldview. This discussion will provide an introduction to the history of Iran. It will consider pivotal moments in the country’s history, including the 1953 CIA-backed coup that overthrew the popular Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh, the rule of Reza Shah Pahlavi and the 1979 revolution that established Ayatollah Khomeini's theocratic state. It will also consider features of Iranian Shi’a Islam, the structures of state power that maintain authoritarian rule and the failed attempts at reform.Emeritus Professor Andrew Markus is an accomplished historian and academic, specialising in Australian immigration history. For a number of years he taught the history of the modern Middle East at Monash University.
