At the start of the twentieth century, Australian women left home in droves to venture to the metropolises of Paris and London, seeking greater freedoms and artistic opportunities. Many of these women never returned to live in Australia, the alluring modernity of their new, unconventional lives abroad sitting at odds with their more conservative place of birth. This talk explores the cultural phenomenon of these intrepid expatriates, examining the new networks of belonging forged by such bold women on the other side of the world.Dr Amelia Birch holds a PhD from the University of Western Australia. Her doctoral work explored the radical partnership of artistic expatriates Agnes Goodsir and Rachel Dunn in interwar Paris and London. She also works at Claremont Museum!
