𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵𝘀: 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗱𝗱𝘆 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 & 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗼𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗲𝘀

Many myths still shape how the world sees Autistic people—and those myths hurt Autistics.

From outdated stereotypes to everyday misconceptions, these false ideas create barriers to understanding, connection, and respect.

This workshop dives into the most common misconceptions about autism, exploring where they come from, why they continue to persist, and how they impact everyday life.

Together, we’ll unpack the difference between myth and reality, challenge outdated narratives, and highlight the diverse experiences of Autistic people.

This session is for Autistic people, their partners, and professionals who want to build stronger, more supportive relationships rooted in real understanding.


We will cover the following myths and misconceptions:

- Autism affects mostly boys
- Everyone is a little Autistic
- Autistic people don’t have empathy
- Autistic people are savants

The session is a 45 minute presentation followed by a 15 minute Q&A.

 

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

I am an AuDHD therapist, supervisor, writer & educator, working in Canberra.  The focus of my counselling work is working with Autistic/ADHD/AuDHD adults as well as people recovering from trauma.  This often involves supporting adults through the late diagnosis process for autism & ADHD, as well as providing support through the post-diagnosis phase.   I also provide clinical & professional supervision to other Autistic counsellors or those who work with Autistic adults.   I also train and provide consultation to organisations on providing neurodiversity affirming services
