Creating Effective and Imaginative Free Enchaînement Across RAD Graded Syllabi
This workshop is designed to increase a ballet teacher’s confidence and ability to create and devise suitable enchaînements which support syllabus content and student progression and achievement across all RAD Graded levels. Participants will identify key vocabulary and devise enchaînements which train specific aspects of technique and execution, gaining an understanding of how to build technical skills and develop performance skills and musicality in their students.
Ahead of the workshop, participants will be required to collate a playlist of musical accompaniment covering different time signatures, tempi and musical styles and which could be used for the creation of enchaînement as part of the workshop.
Aims
- To gain knowledge and understanding of how to break down RAD syllabus settings
- To improve participants’ confidence in creating enchaînement using a range of musical rhythms
- To share and discuss ideas on creating effective and imaginative preparatory exercises and enchaînement to enhance and support syllabus learning
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion, participants will:
- have knowledge and understanding of approaches to breaking down syllabus settings,
- have a knowledge and understanding of how music choices can affect and influence the learning process and performance product,
- have gained insights into some of the different approaches which can be applied to the teaching of RAD syllabus settings, and
- have the ability to create preparatory exercises and enchaînement which support and enhance the learning and teaching of RAD Graded syllabi.

Format
In-person practical workshop
Includes practical exercises and group activities in the studio with your tutor and fellow teachers. When participating in the practical elements of these activities, you are participating at your own risk and should only do those activities that you consider safe for your own body. Before participating, please ensure you are in a safe space, that is free of obstacles, suitable to work in safely, that the floor surface is suitable and that you have appropriate footwear for that surface.
Recommended preparation
Participants are requested to bring a playlist of musical accompaniment covering different time signatures, tempi and musical style. The playlist should contain a minimum of 6 tracks and may cover a wide range of musical styles or genres.
Playlists may be compiled on a mobile device.

Julie trained vocationally at The Dance School of Scotland and graduated from the Royal Ballet School Teachers’ Training Course. She has had a diverse career – performing, choreographing, teaching and creating resources for study in dance. She has 35 years’ experience in dance, dance training and education.
An Alumni of The Royal Ballet School, she is a Tutor for their Affiliate Training and Assessment Program internationally.
Selected by the RAD Creative Panel as an original Tutor of the new RAD syllabus, she conducts CPD courses for teachers throughout Australasia.
For the RAD Faculty of Education, she has 17 years’ experience in dance teacher training from certificate to post graduate level.
She piloted and guest lectured the elected RAD Access Route at Queensland University of Technology since its inception, for dance degree students within the Creative Industries.
Julie is regularly invited on Faculty for exam intensive workshops and summer schools working with dance students at recreational and vocational levels.
As an Adjudicator, Julie has judged national RAD awards and competitions.
She works at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School, in her home city of Melbourne.
