The Boîte presents Bujrum! Celebrating Sevdalinka
Bujrum! (pronounced Booyroom/ translation Welcome/ Help Yourself) is a creative gathering that celebrates the first anniversary of Sevdalinka, the traditional song from Bosnia and Herzegovina, being inscribed as UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The gathering features ensemble SARAY Iluminado Quartet, Bosnian-Australian theatre maker, Goran Ðurić, and the Bosnian community choir Sevdalinka conducted by Damir Kalajdžić. All these ensembles and artists showcase and champion the many faces and voices of diasporic Bosnian and Herzegovinian communities through interpretations of traditional music, as well as, new original works of music, prose and poetry that pay homage to the Balkan Sevdah aesthetic.
The evening includes individual performances of original and traditional music by SARAY Iluminado Quartet and the Sevdalinka Choir, Goran Ðurić's multi-lingual prose in Bosnian, Serbian and English, as well as, a collaborative medley featuring all participants.
Named after a vernacular phrase of welcome, and curated by Nela Trifković to celebrate the Bosnian spirit of hospitality even at times of great adversity, the ritual opens with the offering of slatko i voda, (sweet preserve made from cooked fruit or flower petals in a sugar syrup, served with a glass of water.) This offering is served as a welcome refreshment for guests. It is traditionally offered to visitors upon arrival, symbolising a space of hospitality, respect and an evocation of abundance for both the guest and the host. Welcome to our house of Sevdah in Naarm!
