Explore the RAD’s brand‑new Musical Theatre syllabus in a dedicated three‑day Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course designed to equip teachers with the skills, insight, and confidence to deliver this exciting new genre.

Across three days, the course covers how to deliver singing, acting and dancing in your classes, with a view to preparing your students for exams. You don’t necessarily need to have had previous experience in all three areas: you will take away the skills and confidence to incorporate this exciting new genre into your studio. 

RAD Registered Teachers must attend and complete the full course to be eligible to enter students for RAD Musical Theatre exams, making it an essential step for those looking to embrace this new business opportunity.

Teachers without RAD Registered Teacher status may attend the course however, only RAD Registered Teachers can enter students for RAD Musical Theatre exams. Find out more about eligibility to become an RAD Registered Teacher here.

Format

In-person practical workshop

Includes group activities in the studio with your tutor and fellow teachers.

 

Vocal Foundations for Musical Theatre

Focus: Singing Technique and the Developing Voice in Musical Theatre

Acting Through Song

Focus: Acting, Improvisation, and Voice for Musical Theatre Teachers

Dance as Narrative

Focus: Storytelling Through Dance in Musical Theatre

 

Aims

The aims of this course are to:

  • Explore the concepts of physical efforts in relation to singing,
  • Confidently introduce healthy vocal technique,
  • Understand and support young developing voices and have awareness of the best working environment to help encourage confidence and improvement,
  • Develop core acting and improvisation techniques to help students build characters, interpret songs, and perform expressively, and
  • Learn to use dance as a primary storytelling device, with emphasis on characterisation, choreographic intention, and integration with text and song.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, participants will:

  • Have gained practical strategies and a strong foundational understanding of vocal technique suitable for young voices when working in musical theatre triple threat training,
  • Be able to apply simple acting techniques to song and movement,
  • Be able to use improvisation as a tool for building performance confidence,
  • Be able to coach emotional and vocal expression authentically,
  • Have developed effective approaches to delivering acting skills tasks within the RAD Musical Theatre Graded Syllabus,
  • Be able to confidently choreograph for storytelling,
  • Be able to use movement to express emotion, motivation, and narrative arcs,
  • Be able to teach students how to perform beyond technique with intention and character, and
  • Have developed effective approaches to delivering dance/movement skills tasks within the RAD Musical Theatre Graded Syllabus.
