Formed around a shared admiration for Ella’s elegance, rhythmic precision, and joyful spirit, the group brings her music to life with warmth, respect, and a fresh sense of intimacy. Their tribute celebrates not imitation, but interpretation—honoring Ella’s legacy while allowing each musician’s voice to shine.At the piano, John Sting anchors the group with lyrical phrasing and subtle harmonic color, creating a rich foundation for exploration. Double bassist Carly Grange provides a resonant, walking pulse that keeps the music grounded and alive, while drummer Esther Longway adds effortless swing and dynamic sensitivity, shaping each performance with taste and finesse. Trumpeter Matt King brings a bright, expressive tone, weaving melodic lines that echo the playful brilliance of classic jazz. At the heart of Monoplay is vocalist Melany Hopper, whose clear tone, expressive timing, and deep connection to the lyrics capture the spirit of Ella Fitzgerald’s storytelling and joy.
