Eric Partridge & the Scholartis Press by John Arnold
About
'Eric Partridge and the Scholartis Press': Simon Farley in conversation with John ArnoldThe Scholartis Press was founded in 1927 in London by the future lexicographer, Eric Partridge. In its eight year existence, the press published 126 titles. These included scholarly translation of classical texts, edited editions of pre-C19th English literature and contemporary fiction. Amongst the latter were the first novel of James Hanley, the first collection of stories by Norah Hoult, a collection of stories by a young H. E. Bates and Sleeveless Errand, a novel by Norah James banned on the eve of its publication. Scholartis also published several lexicographical titles edited by Eric Partridge, being the catalyst for his latter distinguished career as the chronicler of slang and compiler of various dictionaries and word related books.
Simon Farley, the immediate past president of the Bibliographical Society of Australia and New Zealand (BSANZ), is Fryer Librarian at the University of Queensland, Eric Partridge's alma mater. John Arnold, also a former president of BSANZ, is the author of the recently published Eric Partridge and the Scholartis Press: a history and bibliography (Hull, UK: Private Libraries Association, 2025).
