Discover the fascinating stories of early Yass Valley residents, such as explorer Hamilton Hume, pastoralist AB Triggs, and victims of the notorious William Munday. Share in their triumphs, secrets, and misfortunes while strolling among their headstones dating back to 1843.Yass Graveside Yarns is a unique two-hour guided walking tour which earned NSW Parliament recognition in 2024, and will be conducted by experienced volunteers from the Yass Valley History Centre. It’s an amazing opportunity to engage with local history in an unforgettable way.
Following the cemetery walk, enjoy a guided tour of the nearby privately-owned Cliftonwood homestead, built by John Watson ca. 1841 on land owned by Hamilton Hume. You will also have the opportunity to explore the grounds containing Watson’s Bottle - an 8-metre deep former grain storage tank, outbuildings and antique farm machinery.
Please note: the ground at the cemetery is uneven in places, due to our resident rabbits and wombat. Please wear sturdy footwear and bring sun protection and water.
Meet at Yass Cemetery carpark, Irvine Drive, Yass for a 9:30am start.
The National Trust will provide some light refreshments at Cliftonwood but you are welcome to bring your lunch to enjoy at Cliftonwood or head into Yass after the tour.
