Why dead women matter
About
When we talk about women in history, we tend to mean women who have shaped society in what we see as a meaningful contribution. But what about women who have been killed by violence? Don’t they count? Join artist Dans Bain in a conversation with Penny Underwood, President, Hawthorn Historical Society, about how she is working to move this perception of dead women as mere statistics to being remembered in their own right.Dans is the founder of the Lost Petition, an ongoing textile artwork that lists women and children who have lost their lives to gendered violence in Australia from 2008. The work is 40 metres long and proceeds to grow in length as women and children’s lives continue to be lost. It will be on show at the talk.
The conversation will be suitable for all ages.
