AFI February Presentation

AFI February Presentation

hero
Energy is a major and volatile cost for Victorian foundries. Every year we talk about the impact of high energy costs. Over the past several years respondents to our Industry report have highlighted this as being one of , if not the single most pressing issue impacting their business.
Over the last decade we’ve heard from several speakers about the benefits of businesses collaborating on their energy contract purchase. For many of our businesses though there have always been various barriers to securing a Group Buyer energy contract and these barriers have proven too large to overcome. A coordinated Energy Buying Group could leverage collective purchasing power to reduce costs, manage risk, and advance sustainability objectives while strengthening industry collaboration.
Mark Grenning (ex-Rio Tinto, ex-EUAA) has decades of experience in dealing with energy contracts. Through Mark's presentation we will get gain a better understanding of the very complex and costly electricity and gas markets.

This presentation to members would cover two parts:
• Summary of electricity and gas market trends and outlook for the next 5 years focussing on the risks members face especially around having individual short term contracts vs longer term group contracts.
• The process required for group buying.

Following the presentation, businesses wishing to investigate further will be asked to complete an expression of interest. Mark would then work with these businesses as follows -
• co-ordinating the collection of information including:
o forecast electricity and gas demand
o preferences on contract terms and conditions
• Development of an Expression of Interest document that would be sent to prospective consultants asking them to set out their experience in group buying tender processes
• Evaluation of EOI responses and recommend the preferred consultant to the group
• Work with the selected consultant to develop tender documents including standard terms and conditions for electricity and gas supply and possible ACCC approval
• Evaluating tender responses and recommending the preferred suppliers.
• Work with businesses preferred lawyers at all stages – if this was required.
• Provide regular progress reports.

Those businesses that act on this presentation have the potential to save $000’s on the energy bills.
This is our first activity for 2026 and could be your most important. Register now !!
