About
Baroque with a twist: Peter Hagen (harpsichord) and Niels Bijl (saxophones) recreate known and lesser known baroque masterpieces.Italian early seventeenth century music allows for so much leeway in performance that it is exciting to explore new possibilities. This is precisely what Duo De Fesch is doing with the combination of saxophone and harpsichord. With no clearly designated instrument in the original scores the saxophone is perfectly set to cover
this repertoire which was often performed on the cornetto which is a sort of cross
between a trumpet and recorder. Classically trained Niels Bijl brings the sound of the
very sweet sounding cornetto to this repertoire with great skill and musicianship.
From exciting rapid passages to haunting episodes, he raises the sound of the
saxophone to new expressive heights. The highly skilled continuo player, Peter
Hagen, brings all the textures and harmonies in a decorated bass line to this music
thus creating an all-enveloping sound. His harpsichord was made in The
Netherlands by Klinkhamer and is the perfect for this repertoire with its clear attack
and singing sound.
“Peter Hagen and Niels Bijl enraptured music lovers with their combined interpretation of baroque music. Hearing Niels' soprano sax against Peter’s harpsichord was an amazing eye- and ear-opening experience!”
