250 YEARS SINCE THE BIRTH OF IOANNIS KAPODISTRIAS
About
A joint collaboration of the Athenian Association of NSW and the non-for-profit Unity in Philia.A discussion by Dr Vassilis Adrahtas, Convenor of Greek Studies at UNSW and Co-founder of Unity in Philia.
2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first Governor of the free Greek state. Although Kapodistrias governed primarily from Aegina and Nafplio, he had already recognised the strategic and symbolic importance of Athens as the future capital of the new nation. This lesser-known aspect of his vision offers a compelling opportunity for deeper exploration and public discussion.
The lecture will be accompanied by a curated visual presentation of artworks by educator, writer and visual artist Stella Sorotou, created especially to complement and respond to the themes of the talk.
