Jessie Street Luncheon 2026
The international order in retreat: what it means for middle powers
The international order is fraying. Long-standing assumptions about stable rules, effective multilateralism, and constraints on power are being abandoned or are under strain. We are navigating sharper great-power rivalry, more coercive statecraft and a world increasingly transactional.
What does this shift mean for middle powers like Australia?
How do we protect our interests and values when rules are contested or abandoned, and enforcement is uneven? What does credible leadership look like?
Join the Jessie Street Trust for a conversation with Bob Carr about the limits of the international order, what is changing and the practical choices Australia faces as a middle power. He will also consider where cooperation can still be advanced on complex global challenges, and what a more effective Australian role could look like in the years ahead.
When you book tickets, we also invite you, as a Jessie Street Trust supporter, to sponsor one or more school students to attend the lunch. Attending this event at an impressionable stage of life inspires them to strive for social justice and to carry Jessie's legacy forward. Your generous sponsorship will enable school students, for whom cost is a barrier, to join us at the lunch.
