Ensemble Lumen: Swivel and Swerve
Elizabeth Laytonm violin
Edith Salzmannm cello
Anna Goldsworthy, piano
Lloyd Van’t Hoff, clarinet
Ensemble Lumen has emerged as one of Australia’s most compelling new chamber groups, quickly earning critical acclaim for both its individual artistry and collective vision. Described by Limelight Magazine as “a significant new presence in Adelaide’s musical life” (★★★★★) and praised by The Barefoot Review as “excellent musicians at the top of their game, and together they are even better,” the ensemble has established itself as a distinctive and authoritative voice on the national stage.
Formed in 2025 by faculty of the Elder Conservatorium of Music at Adelaide University, Ensemble Lumen unites a cohort of leading performers whose international careers span solo, chamber, and orchestral performance, festival leadership, and recording. The ensemble’s name is drawn from sub cruce lumen (“the light of learning under the Southern Cross”), the historic motto of the former University of Adelaide, and stands as a nod to the legacy of this foundational institution, reflecting a shared commitment to illuminating the chamber repertoire through performances of clarity, depth, and imagination.
In its inaugural year, Ensemble Lumen made major festival appearances at OzAsia Festival and the Adelaide Festival’s Daylight Express, was nominated for the Adelaide Critics Circle Award (Professional: Group – Music) and featured in national broadcasts on ABC Classic. In 2026, the ensemble will appear in the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s She Speaks series and undertake international tours to New Zealand and mainland China.
