Vintage Movie Matinee: Lassie Come Home (1943)
About
Step back in time and enjoy a classic film experience in the historic Bridgetown Town Hall, where picture shows were screened from the 1910s onwards. As part of the Southern Forests and Valleys Heritage Festival, the Shire of Bridgetown–Greenbushes invites you to a free vintage movie matinee featuring Lassie Come Home (1943).This beloved family film tells the story of a devoted collie who travels hundreds of miles to reunite with her young owner. The film stars Roddy McDowall alongside a young Elizabeth Taylor in one of her early screen roles. Lassie Come Home was the very first Lassie film and launched one of the most enduring animal characters in film and television history.
Filmed in rich Technicolor at a time when colour movies were still relatively rare, the film was part of the growing wave of colour productions appearing in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Seeing it on the big screen is a wonderful way to experience the charm of classic cinema while celebrating Bridgetown’s own picture show history.
