Like the twelve days of Christmas, many forget that in the Church’s calendar, Easter is not one day, but fifty! In this period of rejoicing, after the fasting of Lent and the solemnity of Holy Week, fall three of Christianity’s four principal feasts: Easter, Ascension, and Pentecost, celebrating in turn Christ’s resurrection from death, his ascension into Heaven, and the sending of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Church.Featuring cantatas for these days by Johann Sebastian Bach — BWV 4 "Christ lay in death’s dark bonds", BWV 11 "Praise God in his kingdoms" (the Ascension Oratorio), and BWV 74 "Whoever loves me will keep my Word" — and complemented by music of Schütz, Praetorius, and Tallis, this programme provides a musical tour of this joyous liturgical season.
