Schubert Mass No 6 in E Flat - Lithgow
Schubert’s final mass – full of drama, chromatic fugues, contrasting dynamics and stunning key modulations – is considered one of his greatest works, moving, profound and powerful.
Six glorious movements. The peaceful opening of the Kyrie. The Gloria with its haunting melodies and a fugue that seemingly uses every form of contrapuntal composition known to man. The Credo with one of Schubert’s most beautiful melodies, Et incarnatus est. The creative chromaticism and emotional dynamics of the Sanctus that pave the path for the Romantic composers to follow. The Benedictus that looks back to high Classical composition, reminiscent of Mozart and Haydn. Finally, the sweet tranquillity of Dona nobis pacem in the Agnus Dei, bringing the Mass to a close.
Also on the program: Tantum ergo in Eb (Schubert), O come everyone that thirsteth, from Elijah (Mendelssohn) and Agnus Dei from Mass in C (Coronation Mass, Mozart).
The choir will be joined by soloists Samanta Lestavel (Soprano), Elizabeth Cooper (Mezzo-Soprano), Joshua Oxley (Tenor) and Tristan Entwistle (Bass)
