About

HEN offers a range of 45-minute first aid training sessions across Victoria for primary-aged children, facilitated by St John Ambulance and teaching the importance of First Aid and what to do in an event of an emergency.

The knowledge and skills gained from the program will develop kids' First Aid awareness, and contribute to building a more resilient community. Bringing to life the importance of First Aid and what to do in an emergency (including calling 000 and performing CPR), the interactive games, Storytime and Action Plan scenarios make the program more enjoyable than ever before. The learning is age-appropriate, with kids divided into three age groups, & taught a selected learning module (see full details below).

Kids are encouraged to wear clothing suitable for floor work (e.g. pants or shorts), & should bring a pen / pencil & paper.

These sessions are provided for free by St John. A $5 booking fee per child per session covers venue hire, with any surplus funds donated to St John Ambulance. If a venue is hired for free, all attending families will be reimbursed in full.

This event is aimed at primary-aged children, however junior secondary-aged kids who have rudimentary first aid skills and knowledge are welcome to join as well.

Module Summaries:

Junior primary age group modules:

Storytime (4y-7y)

Through a storybook, children will see how Johnny Bear identifies an emergency, puts the Danger, Response and Send for help strategy into action and helps call 000 in an informative session. Kids will learn the first aid chant that will help them remember what to do in an emergency. Includes a fun quiz on first aid to get children up and involved.

Bones, bumps and bandages (5y-8y)

This program is designed to build children's confidence in identifying urgent and emergency situations. They'll get to know different first aid equipment and learn how to help someone with a cut, broken bone, or head injury. Additionally, they'll review the first three steps of the DRSABCD action plan and practice applying it to these scenarios. They also get to participate in fun and hands-on activities such as bandaging each other and roleplay.

Danger, Response, Send (5y-8y)

Kids learn how to spot DANGER in an emergency, RESPOND accordingly and SEND for help. They will be guided on what number to call and act out a scenario to get them comfortable calling 000 in real life. Children will play a fun and interactive game as teams compete in the first aid quiz. By the end of the program, everyone will leave with essential skills and knowledge which they can call upon in an emergency situation.

Middle Primary age group (8y-10y) modules:

Airway & Breathing

Following on from the junior primary modules, children will revise ‘DRS’ which involves assessing for dangers, obtaining a response and calling Triple Zero. The main focus of this module will be demonstrating how to check airway and breathing and how to place a patient into the recovery position. Kids will then apply the knowledge they have learnt through an interactive game based on the DRSAB action plan.

Snake Bites

In this program, children will learn about how to stay safe in areas where snakes may live and understand what steps to take if someone is bitten. They will revisit the DRSABCD action plan and learn how to apply it for someone who has been bitten by a snake. Kids will also have the opportunity to practice applying a snake bite bandage.

Anaphylaxis

In this program, children will learn the difference between a mild/moderate allergic reaction and a severe, life-threatening anaphylactic reaction. They will explore common allergens and the foods they can be found in. Kids will also learn the importance of getting help quickly, and become familiar with adrenaline auto-injectors (AAIs), including what they look like and why they are important. They will revisit the DRSABCD action plan and learn how to apply it when responding to an anaphylaxis.

Senior primary / junior high age (10y+) group modules:

CPR

Reiterates the learning of the middle primary modules, however incorporates a practical CPR component, guiding children through how to perform CPR and when it is required in a First Aid situation. Kids will also participate in group problem-solving scenarios based on a variety of first aid situations allowing them to apply their knowledge.
