Wendell Berry's courageous practice during fraught timesFrom 1985-1987, Wendell Berry’s Sabbath poems tell the story of a beloved stand of woods next to his property clear cut and grazed to the ground. As a reader of these poems, we are invited to look and see with Berry as he moves through anticipated grief, anger, devastation, sorrow and the glimmer of resurrection.
What might Berry’s look and see practice have to offer us as we live with destruction and sorrow? What seasoned wisdom is on offer for us as we companion others?
The morning will include an introduction to relevant themes in Berry’s writings including his encouragement to look and see. We will engage a few Sabbath poems from the 1985-1987 period that tell the story of his loss with special attention given to how they speak into our experiences and context. There will be time for personal reflection and sharing.
