Basic Macropod Rescue & Care Course
About
Wildcare’s Basic Macropod Rescue & Care training is primarily designed for people who know little or nothing about Macropods but would like to rehabilitate them.Prior to registering it is highly recommended you review the pre-registration questionnaire below to determine if your circumstances will allow you to become a carer.
The course covers the basics involved when rehabilitating, raising and releasing Macropods, including:
- Being a Carer & the Carer system
- Basic Anatomy & Species Identification
- Determining Stage of Development
- Rescue, Assessment & Transport
- Caring for your Macropod
- Health & Basic First Aid
The course includes comprehensive notes supplied electronically.
Before registering for this course please consider the following to determine if your circumstances will allow you to become a carer:
- Caring for macropods requires a great deal of time and they are a long-term commitment. They require 24/7 care. This may last anywhere from 12 to 18 months. Do you have the time to devote to raising joeys?
- Do you work? Will your employer allow you to bring joeys into the work environment? What is your time availability to feed and toilet your joeys during work hours?
- Do you travel away from home for short or extended periods? This may limit your capacity to be a primary carer.
- Is your house suitable for raising joeys? I.e. noise levels, pets, children? Joeys must not interact with your pets and require a quiet stress-free environment to thrive.
- Is there enough space for joeys both inside and outside your home? Do you have a safe, enclosed yard? Is your yard large enough for exploration and exercise?
- Can you afford to care for macropods? There are set-up costs (pouches, liners, bottles, teats, etc.), milk formula, supplements, medical care. Wildcare can provide a subsidy (upon application) for milk and other feed products. Initial vet visits are covered by Wildcare, but ongoing or subsequent vet visits are the responsibility of the carer. This can be costly.
- Are you emotionally prepared? Unfortunately, not every joey survives through to release. Whilst extremely rewarding, caring for macropods can be excruciatingly painful if a joey gets sick or sadly if it dies. Can you cope with these losses?
- Do you understand that you are an interim parent, which may mean passing your joeys on to another carer when needed (e.g. to be buddied with another joey or for pre-release stage).
