Energy Transition 2026: Power System Operation & Control

Since 2016 the contribution by solar and wind energy to Australia’s electricity generation has increased from less than 5% to nearly 40%. The rapid transition from traditional low-variability high-inertia generation to high-variability low-inertia generation creates significant challenges in maintaining the stability and reliability of Australia’s electricity grid.

In the third presentation of the Energy Transition 2026 series, Robert Veleba will describe the technical issues and challenges facing Australia’s power system planners and engineers responsible for the integration of new energy technologies into Australia’s electricity grid and their reliable operation.

Robert's presentation will cover issues including:

- Basic power system concepts
- Frequency dynamics and control
- Voltage control
- Harmonics
- Blackouts
- System protection
- Lifecycle costs

Robert Veleba is a mechanical and electrical engineer with 40 years experience in the power industry in Australia and South Africa. His knowledge and experience includes system planning and economic evaluations, power system frequency dynamics and spinning reserve requirements, power plant operation and maintenance, and power plant design and testing.

There will be a Q&A session following the presentation, then light refreshments
