The Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) course equips adults (parents, grandparents, carers, teachers, youth workers) with the skills & confidence to support young people experiencing mental health challenges or crises. YMHFA is an evidence-based training programme designed for adults who teach, care for or support young people aged 12–18.
The course teaches participants to recognise early warning signs of mental health problems, understand common mental illnesses in adolescents and respond effectively to mental health crises until professional help is available or the crisis resolves.
AIMS:
Recognise and respond: Identify signs of mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, substance use, or eating disorders, and respond appropriately.
Support in crisis: Learn strategies to assist young people experiencing suicidal thoughts, self-harm, or other mental health emergencies.
Reduce stigma: Promote understanding and reduce stigma around mental health problems in adolescence.
Provide guidance: Help young people access professional support and other resources.
This is a 14-hour course held over 2 Sundays, 9.00 for 9.30am-4.30pm Sunday 14 June and Sunday 21 June 2026.
COURSE FEES
$50 for parents/grandparents/carers
$100 for teachers/youth workers
The fee includes a course book, a light lunch and morning and afternoon tea.
NB the usual course fee for this course is $300 but we are able to offer it at a subsidised rate due to support from a Wingecarribee Shire Council community grant.
