Building Character (Wednesdays)| Term 3 | On The Fly Impro
About
Do you want characters that feel bold, specific, and impossible to shake whether you are in a tight short form game or a sprawling long form show? This course is all about building characters that last, all while continuing to build your core impro skills. This course draws from Mike Leigh’s Character Based Improvisation, Laban movement, and Stanislavski techniques to explore physicality, impulse, instinct, and behaviour before worrying about plot or clever choices. You will steal from real people politely, borrow from animals, play with objects, raise the stakes, and discover how your character behaves under pressure, in relationships, and across different worlds.
The process is designed to work for both short form and long form impro, helping you create characters that pop quickly, stay consistent, adapt on the fly, and deepen over time.
By the end of seven weeks, you will leave with a practical toolkit for creating strong characters quickly, along with a deeply developed main character you can keep returning to. You will know how to generate characters fast when you need them, and how to build them further when the work asks for depth.
This course offers clear tools, repeatable methods, and practical outcomes for improvisors serious about character work.
