This session will consider the following: While AI tools promise efficiency and innovative capabilities, they also raise significant ethical concerns, primarily in the areas of confidentiality, accountability, transparency and competence.

Presenter

Catherine Scott is an experienced litigator and administrative lawyer with more than 20 years’ experience practising in commercial litigation, discrimination law, and environment and planning law. She regularly appears as counsel in the Supreme Court, Federal Court, Magistrates Court and the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, and is recognised for her strategic and effective advocacy across complex disputes and appeals. In addition to her litigation practice, Catherine advises major infrastructure project proponents on navigating Tasmanian and Commonwealth statutory approval processes, environmental and planning frameworks, and associated appeals. Her notable matters include acting as lead counsel in the high-profile MONA “Ladies Lounge” discrimination case, Moorilla Estate Pty Ltd v Lau; Cawthorn v Citta Hobart Pty Ltd concerning federal jurisdiction and constitutional issues; Hill v Forteng Pty Ltd before the Full Court of the Federal Court; APF Welding Pty Ltd v Amplified Contractors Pty Ltd; and Mundy v Larrarte. Committed to advancing the profession, Catherine has played an active role in fostering a positive and inclusive legal culture in Tasmania. In recognition of her significant contribution to the profession, she was awarded the Law Society of Tasmania President’s Award in 2025. Catherine delivers the Society's Sexual Harassment and Workplace Culture Workshops and is chair of the Society's Wellbeing Committee.

The Society's building at 56 Charles Street, Launceston was built in 1860 and there is no lift or disability access to the upstairs rooms.
