HUTT STREET CENTRE FUNDRAISING CONCERT
About
Trinity Sessions, Church of the Trinity and The Effective Living Centre present Slava and Sharon Grigoryan with Nancy Bates. This year our annual fundraising concert will be supporting Hutt St Centre. All proceeds from the concert will help Hutt St Centre with their mission to end homelessness: through addressing immediate needs such as offering a shower, a meal, or a phone recharge; providing access to over 20 visiting services, ranging from Government services to health and wellbeing supports; connecting people to housing, education and employment opportunities, and advocating for systematic change and amplifying the voices of those experiencing homelessness. Hutt St Centre help homeless people build their skills and confidence to change their circumstances for good. Every person deserves an equal chance to live a full life. Through advocacy, fundraising activities, their unwavering support and culture of respect, Hutt St Centre is working to end homelessness and injustice for the people of Adelaide.
The performers are:
SLAVA AND SHARON GRIGORYAN: The success of any collaboration is dependent on a myriad of factors, some obvious, others less tangible. Sharon & Slava Grigoryan are an example of such a synergy, resulting in music that connects deeply with the listener. Perhaps it is their union professionally and in life that provides the intangible factor fuelling their passionate and sensitive performances.
Their repertoire spans cultures, generations and genres – from standard works for guitar and cello (Vivaldi, Granados, Piazzolla) to creations by contemporary composers, their own compositions and arrangements which shine a new light on familiar favourites.
Slava Grigoryan is an acknowledged guitar master on the world stage. Sharon Grigoryan has forged a formidable career throughout Australia performing with all major symphony orchestras and chamber ensembles, including her seven-year tenure with the Australian String Quartet.
Sharon & Slava Grigoryan’s debut album ‘Our Place’ (ABC) was nominated for Best Classical Album at the 2020 ARIA Awards.
NANCY BATES: Nancy Bates is a First Nations composer, writer, educator, and proudly Barkindji. With cultural ties to communities running the length of the Baarka, she is river woman living a multifaceted life, intertwining music, education, and advocacy to weaponise and resist the colonial continuum.
From 2013 to 2017, Nancy completed a musical apprenticeship under the mentorship of renowned Song Man, Uncle Archie Roach. This experience has spurred her on to become a powerful presence both on stage, and off. In 2022, Bates was awarded the Best Music Award Adelaide Fringe Festival, and in 2023 received the Adelaide Festival Centre's Critic's Choice Award and a Star on the Walk of Fame.
Through the ‘Songs Inside’ film project, Nancy teaches ukulele and songwriting to women in prison, giving them voice, and freedom of expression within a colonial punishment system.
