A rare performance of an oft studied iconic Australian play, with express permission from the author, Louis Nowra. Through Inside the Island, Louis Nowra pursues his concern with the mechanics of power and the ways convention protects the privileged from human nature in this compelling play. Set in a farming district of western New South Wales in 1912, it is demonstrated how a matriarchal imitation of English society is destroyed by an outbreak of ‘holy fire’, madness from a wheat fungus.
