Mattutino: Trio Conté
Rollin Zhao, violin
Josh Dema, cello
Chai Jie Low, piano
Trio Conté presents two iconic piano trios, tracing the evolution of the genre across nearly a century in two closely-related keys.
Haydn's Trio No. 40 in F-sharp minor, composed late in his career, is a prime example of the composer’s mastery of restrained elegance and subtle shifting moods. This trio takes a detour from the composer's usual sunny charm, with an uncharacteristic melancholic tinge.
Dvořák’s Piano Trio No. 3 in F minor, composed in the wake of his mothers death, expands the piano trio model with an expansive and dramatic sound world. The F minor trio is often described as his most “Brahmisan” chamber work, contrasting turbulent movements with warmth and lyricism.
Melbourne-based Trio Conté comprises pianist Chai Jie Low, violinist Rollin Zhao, and cellist Joshua Dema. Each member is an accomplished soloist and ensemble musician, with collective international performance experience across Australia, Asia, Europe, UK, and North America. Their shared passion for chamber music and curiosity for new sound worlds drive their artistry and commitment to cross-cultural dialogue.
Following their sold-out debut at Tempo Rubato in Melbourne in 2024, Trio Conté has become a notable force in Melbourne’s chamber music scene. They have performed for the Kawai Live Series on 3MBS FM Radio, the Lyrebird Music Society, All Saints Concert Series, Scots’ Church Music Series, and will be featured in the 2026 Malvern East Chamber Music Festival and Australian Piano Warehouse Series.
