Cult Classic Lismore is partnering with the Lismore Regional Gallery for a screening of Akira Kurosawa's Dreams at the historic Star Court Theatre.

Join us for an evening that links And her hallway moves like the ocean by Babette Robertson to the screening of this beautiful, strange and deeply personal film. Babette's emotive, surreal and otherworldly paintings recount her dreams as shifting symbols drawn from the collective unconscious. Kurosawa's Dreams is a favourite film of the artist and an inspiration for this exhibition.

Dreams is one of Kurosawa's most visually poetic films. Told as a series of eight vignettes, the film moves through childhood memory, Japanese folklore, war, environmental anxiety, art, death, and renewal. Rather than following a conventional narrative, Dreams unfolds like a collection of visions, each one rich with colour, symbolism, and atmosphere. The film begins in the world of childhood, where the mysterious and the everyday sit side by side. A boy wanders into forbidden places, encounters spirits, and witnesses things he cannot fully understand. From there, the film expands into increasingly haunting and surreal landscapes: ghostly soldiers, apocalyptic skies, a living Van Gogh painting, and villages that seem to exist outside modern time. As the dreams shift between beauty and dread, Kurosawa creates a film shaped by memory, myth, and the fears of the modern world.
