VIVA LA VIDA DE FRIDA
Experience a colourful celebration of Frida Kahlo's life while raising funds for Venezuelan earthquake relief
Saturday 11 July, Adelaide will come alive with the colours, music, art and spirit of Mexico as VIVA LA VIDA DE FRIDA transforms the North Adelaide Community Centre into a vibrant fiesta celebrating the extraordinary life of iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.
This cultural event is also a fundraiser supporting victims of the recent devastating earthquakes in Venezuela, with proceeds from hot food sales, the raffle and silent auction being donated to earthquake relief through Caritas Australia.
The festival takes its name from "Viva La Vida" ("Long Live Life"), the title of Frida Kahlo's final painting, completed shortly before her death in 1954. It perfectly reflects the celebration's themes of resilience, creativity, courage and embracing life despite adversity.
Held during Frida Kahlo Month—marking her birth on 6 July 1907 and her passing on 13 July 1954—the family-friendly event invites visitors of all ages to immerse themselves in authentic Mexican and Latin American culture through music, dance, art, food and interactive experiences.
Visitors can enjoy authentic Mexican and Latin American cuisine, traditional sweets, artisan market stalls, Frida-inspired décor, colourful floral installations and a festive cantina serving Mexican-inspired beverages.
Throughout the day, audiences will experience traditional Mexican folkloric dance performances by the Mexican Revolution dance group, Latin dance showcases by La Bomba Productions, live music by Latin Soul and social dancing led by DJ Señorita featuring salsa, cumbia, bachata, boleros, rancheras and other Latin rhythms.
Creative workshops for children and adults include a Frida Textile Portrait Collage Workshop with Brazilian artist Oscar Arrais, Frida-inspired fan and earring decorating sessions, and mini piñata workshops for children.
Attendees are encouraged to dress as Frida Kahlo and enter the Frida Look-alike Competition, celebrating her iconic fashion featuring embroidered blouses, colourful shawls, indigenous Mexican dress, elaborate flower crowns, bold red lipstick and her unmistakable signature style.
One of the events most unique attractions will be the Roaming Fridas, where costumed performers will share fascinating factual stories about Frida Kahlo's remarkable life, artistic legacy, personal struggles and enduring influence on generations around the world.
Event organiser Natalie Stansfield from LA BOMBA said the celebration is about bringing people together through culture while helping those in need.
"Frida Kahlo's life was defined by resilience, creativity and hope despite immense hardship. We felt there could be no better inspiration for an event that celebrates life while raising vital funds for families rebuilding after the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela."
VIVA LA VIDA DE FRIDA welcomes everyone, whether they are passionate about Mexican culture, lovers of art and music, families looking for a fun day out or simply wanting to support an important humanitarian cause.
