When AS/NZS 1554.1 Preheat Falls Short
Two case studies are presented where non-structural steels were welded to Grade 350, under AS/NZS 1554.1, and the preheat requirements were not sufficient in the standard to pass the hardness requirement. This presentation shows how to approach such welds by using the actual steel chemistry to estimate the CCT hardness vs t8-5 cooling time, which can be used with EN 1011-2 Appendix D.6 to find the best preheat temperature for the achievable heat input.
